The Challenge of EV Fleet Payments

The rise of electric vehicles (EVs) is revolutionizing transportation, but it's also creating a complex and fragmented payments landscape for fleet management. Mastercard aims to address this challenge by building a connected platform. This platform would act as a central data hub, connecting all players in the ecosystem, from charging point operators to fleet managers. By offering features like automatic home charging reimbursements, data aggregation, and automated processes, Mastercard hopes to become the vital intermediary for EV fleet payments.

Transforming EV Fleet Operations

Mastercard's EV Fleet Management product goes beyond just payments. It's designed to transform fleet operations by creating a unified data platform. This platform standardizes data from key stakeholders like car manufacturers (OEMs) and charging point operators (CPOs), boosting overall efficiency. It also provides valuable insights for both fleet managers and drivers, helping them make informed decisions.

The user-centered design ensures the platform tackles the unique challenges of EV fleets. From understanding user needs to creating a dynamic prototype, Mastercard has focused on building a solution that not only resolves current issues but also anticipates future needs for a streamlined experience. Extensive testing guarantees a powerful tool for better decision-making, smoother operations, and an overall enhanced user experience for everyone involved in managing EV fleets.

A Unified Data Platform for Smarter Fleet Management

The growing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) presents a challenge: a fragmented data landscape hindering fleet management. Our goal is to define, design, and validate a value proposition that addresses this issue. This solution would collect and standardize data across key players in the EV ecosystem, such as Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and Charging Point Operators (CPOs). By doing so, we aim to achieve three key objectives:

  • Increase operational efficiency: Streamlined data will allow for smoother fleet operations.
  • Enhance visibility and insights: Consolidated data will provide valuable insights for better decision-making.
  • Improve the experience for EV fleets: A user-centered approach will ensure a positive experience for both fleet managers and drivers.

A User-Centered Approach from Start to Finish

Our EV fleet manager product starts with a user-centered approach, deeply understanding your needs before design begins. We first identify your specific challenges and prioritize functionalities, then establish assumptions and success metrics to guide our progress. By researching existing solutions and evaluating your data, we ensure our design is grounded in reality.

In the design phase, we analyze competitor strengths and weaknesses to define the core tasks and goals for fleet management. We map your current operations to build a prototype that reflects the present state, providing a base for creating a detailed system map and information architecture. With this clarity, we develop content narratives and user interface text that effectively guide users. We then design a clickable prototype to illustrate the future state of your fleet management system.

Finally, we rigorously test our hypotheses through interviews, user journey testing, and design evaluations. This thorough approach guarantees that the final product not only meets but exceeds your operational needs, delivering a highly effective and user-friendly solution.

Shaping the Future of EV Fleet Management

To create a best-in-class EV fleet management product, we've undertaken a comprehensive design and customer experience focus. This involved a deep dive into the current landscape through competitor analysis and user experience assessments. This research helped us identify the core tasks users need to accomplish within an EV fleet management system.

Next, we translated this research into a future vision through the development of detailed user stories and journeys. These stories mapped out how users will interact with our product, and helped us prioritize key features for development.

This focus on user needs extends into our prototyping phase. We're building a user-centered prototype that prioritizes intuitive navigation and data interaction, centered around essential features identified in the research phase. We're also ensuring flexibility by using Charge Data Records (CDR) initially, with a white-label design that can integrate seamlessly with any chosen fleet management software once final data sources are confirmed.

In addition to user experience, we're establishing ourselves as thought leaders in the industry. This includes developing presentations and white papers that explore advanced concepts in fleet management and future driver experiences. Market testing is also on the horizon, with an R&D team developing a plan that includes initial pricing strategies. To ensure our approach resonates with the market, we've conducted partner and industry validation. Positive feedback on our Proof of Concept (PoC) and Market Test plan has been received from both partners and at the International Fleet Safety Summit (IFSS).

Finally, we've kept our Business Development and CPO Account teams informed throughout the process to gauge interest from potential market test partners, and have finalized a narrative to engage them for the upcoming test phase.
